How the Pandemic Allowed us to “Drive Slow and Not Go”

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant strain on EMS systems across the country. Call volume increases, staffing shortages, and continued public misunderstanding of when and why to call 911 have reduced the availability of ambulances to respond to high acuity medical emergencies. Mecklenburg EMS Agency (MEDIC) developed a mitigation process to combat this issue utilizing response time reconfiguration, nurse triage, partnering with Lyft, and empowering Paramedics to suggest alternate transportation methods.
