Diversity among healthcare providers is a recognized mechanism to reduce disparities and advance health equity. However, the EMS workforce in the US is far from representative of the population served. Women and people of color are underrepresented among this critical healthcare workforce. Conversations regarding diversity often become uncomfortable. Considering even the possibility of unconscious bias negatively impacting patient care is unsettling. Yet, the data consistently show disparities in important EMS patient outcomes by patient characteristics. Diversity in EMS is not about filling positions with mandated numbers and it’s about more than language barriers. Join us for a discussion on how to enrich the workforce and knock down barriers to health equity. We’ll discuss the latest research and discuss strategies for growing staff by encouraging diversity and inclusivity.
