Fire-Based EMS Specialist


Jason Derrey joined the IAFF in 2020 as a Fire-Based EMS Specialist.  He works with IAFF affiliates to evaluate EMS systems and provide recommendations aligned with national consensus standards and best practices.

Jason retired at the rank of Captain from an all-hazard fire department in Southwest Washington, bringing decades of experience in emergency medical services. His EMS career began in 1996, and he became a paramedic in 1999. Over the years, he has worked in private, hospital-based, and fire-based EMS systems, giving him a comprehensive understanding of various EMS delivery models. Jason has also served as an EMS instructor across all certification levels, including as an adjunct instructor in a paramedic training program.

Committed to advancing leadership in emergency services, Jason is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Strategic Leadership. He holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University, a Bachelor of Science in Fire Service Administration and Emergency Medical Services Administration, and an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science. He also maintains multiple fire service and EMS credentials to remain up to date on emerging industry trends, as well as maintaining his National Registry Paramedic credential.
